Gone is the time when we had the relief of slow transition between winters and summers. As winter season recedes and spring approaches with little time left to prepare ourselves for oppressive summers with the mercury soaring to mid 40 degree Celsius ready to ooze out of the thermometer! As if these issues are not sufficient, in the platter are also served swollen electricity bills to take care of the increased cooling requirements.

Summers bring with it fair share of problems. There are numerous tangible and visible effects starting from unquenchablethirst to dehydration, skin issues like prickly heat, tanning, developing rashes, sun burns, digestive issue, mental confusionand worst of all, heat stroke. Add to this the agony of variety of summers from extremely dry to humid. Each type of summer brings with it unique sets of challenges.

Enduring summers is no child’s play, or is it? Kids will always want to venture outside to play irrespective of the temperatures. The only way to keep them indoors is to engage them in more interesting activities than playing outside. As if this is not a sufficient enough a challenge while we are already grappling with our busy routines.

Consume Plenty of Fluids

As summer approaches, the commercials on TV and internet transition towards juices, health and sport drinks. It is for a reason and a very valid one. All of us know that how fast our body may be drained out of fluids as we get exposed to summer heat. More so, during dry summers, we may be dehydrated before we realise. The golden rule is to drink and reinvigorate our bodies as frequently as possible. Watch the frequency and colour of your urine to judge your hydration state. Drink even when you are not feeling thirsty. Just remember, avoid drinking at least 45 minutes to one hour before eating food. Drinking refreshing lemonade is a very good option. It helps maintain the electrolytes lost in sweat. Also on the menu should be the revered lassi and coconut water.

Watch what you eat

Nature has got its own way of balancing and enabling us to fight the extreme weathers. Availability of foods such asjuicy fruits, cucumbers, watermelon, onions, curd, bananas, mint, bottle gourdand other seasonal vegetables of summerscan help regulate body temperature during summers. Such foods also help in replenishing electrolytes in your body and keep it hydrated. The key is to eat light and eat right. Avoid eating heavily to avoid indigestion and acidity. Always eat fresh food and avoid storing food for extended durations as summer is also a time when the risk of food poisoning and foodborne illnesses increases. The warm temperatures can cause food to spoil more quickly, and outdoor activities such as picnics and barbecues can lead to improper food handling and preparation.The more mercy you show towards your stomach, richer will be the dividends it will pay back to you!

Wear light clothes which have breathable fabric and light colours. No points for guessing, cotton is the best suited material for this season. There are good quality synthetic materials also available, which help in especially humid summers. Wear headgears such as hats or caps with beaks and wear sunglasses for protection against harmful UV rays. These accessories will not only enhance your style quotient but will also help in protecting your eyes and direct sunlight exposure.

Wear Sunscreen

Sunscreen helps in protecting exposed skin, including your face, neck, ears, and head. Ensure repeated application of sunscreen when exposed to sunlight for long hours and sunscreen has washed off due to sweat. A sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30 will be more beneficial so choose what your wear wisely. Regular use of sunscreen can reduce the risk of developing squamous cell carcinoma by about 40 percent, and melanoma by 50 percent. Other benefits that sunscreen may offer are prevention of wrinkles, sagging, and age spots.

Avoiding Prickly Heat

 Prickly heat can be reduced by reducing exposure to direct sunlight by use of umbrella and correct type of clothing. Avoid sweating by reducing physical activity as far as possible. Staying indoors and keeping body cool and hydrated is the key. If not avoidable to stay indoors, make use of powders available in market which help you keep the skin dry by absorbing sweat. It also prevents bacterial growth and helps reduce friction between skin and clothing to help avoid irritation.

Health Tips Keep your Body Cool 

Summers can be very unforgiving in terms of causing conditions such as heat stroke and heat exhaustion which can be life threatening. It can cause negative effect on mental health and increased load on organs such as brain and kidneys. Heat stroke is a severe condition that can be life-threatening, and it happens when the body’s internal temperature reaches 104 degrees Fahrenheit or higher. To avoid all such effects, it is very important to watch symptoms of indicating towards dehydration, decreased consciousness, dizziness, nausea, increased pulse rate, headache and confusion. Avoid overstressing yourself and take care of others around you. Keeping yourself dehydrated, eating right food and protecting your skin can go a long way in avoiding these lifethreatening conditions. If one still suffers from such condition, immediate medical attention needs to be sought.

It needs no mention that simple precautions, we all are aware of; help us fight the heat and its effect. We already know the routines just that we need someone to remind so that we sail through successfully. It would be ideal to stay indoors to keep our bodies cool during these testing weathers. Getting exposed to direct sunlight is what is not desirable in summers. However, this may not be possible as working professionals have to attend office and kids have to attend schools.
